Have you ever wondered who invented the modern computers we use today? Now, you would probably say Microsoft or Apple; however the truth is modern computers were invented by Alan Turing. He invented the Turing Machine, which is a computer that could process anything. In other words he created the first programing language. Not only did he contribute to computer science, but also in biology, chemistry, physics, and especially mathematics. He has countless number of achievements including his contribution of cracking the Nazi enigma code, which seemed at that time, â€Å"unbreakable†. Now lets dive into the life of Alan. Now where is better to start than his early life. Alan was born into a wealthy family. He was born on the June of 25, 1912 in London, Maida Vale, Warrington Crescent, and Warrington Lodge. He was christened on july 7, 1912 at the St. Saviour's church. Alan did not live with his father early on in his life because his father, Julius Turing worked for a civil service in India. He worked for the Madras Presidency. There he met alan mother Ethel Stoney. Alan was the youngest in his family. He has one older brother named John Turing. He his 4 years older than Alan. Alan was a very curious boy. He always questioned how thing are done. He was always not shy and ready to greet anyone. He also acted a lot more mature for his age. He loved to use large words as a child. However he did enjoy the company of figures. Extraordinarily, he thought himself to read in 3 weeks by using an interesting method he deceived called the â€Å"knowing spot†. He had a problem of not remembering to read t he figures from left to right or vise versa. Alan then used his left hand’s thumb as a marker for reading the figures. He called it the â€Å"knowing spot†. L... ...t the same yard as his father. He did have a rule to eat an apple a night. He also loved to chant the poison apple brewing scene from snow white as a child. Some people misunderstanding that the Apple Logo does not come from this reason ,but instead because the bite helps distinguish it from a cherry. However Steve Jobs says, "God, we wish it were" Alan Turing was a man who accomplishments countless number of things in his life. Varying from computers, biology, physics, and mathematics. However he lost his life at such a young age for a reason unknown to us. He helped win WWII and created the concept of programming when everyone else says it is impossible. Also he did not stop there but also defined what makes a computer smart. He created the first Artificial intelligence. He still use all use methods today. He was the man known as the father of modern computers.

Aggressive Behavior of Marine Fishes

The notion of â€Å"survival of the fittest† of Charles Darwin denotes competition in the available life resources among living organisms. Biologists typically classify competition as exploitative or scramble competition and interference or defense competition (Reebs, 2008). In exploitative competition, the species explore every nook in the environment to search for the best niche, ample food supply or even the best mate.On the other hand, defense competition results when a particular species defend their niche, food stuffs, offspring, and mate against invading animals (Reebs, 2008). With these, animals show aggressive behaviors to warn other species or to defend themselves.Hierarchical Social Structure Among FishesChasing and biting are commonly observed among fishes especially when a new one was placed in the group of fishes in a tank or an aquarium. Aggressive behaviors are shown by dominant fishes in the group until such time that a certain order was attained within the gr oup where specific place for every fish has been defined (Reebs, 2008).This is called as hierarchy among fishes for a single fish dominates other fishes in the group. Since fishes not only spend high energy in fighting but also suffer injuries (Reebs, 2008), the attainment of harmony within their group through hierarchical social structure benefits them all. This phenomenon is observed among the school of salmonids, eels, centrarchids, catfishes, poeciliids, and other species (Reebs, 2008).In the hierarchy, the dominant fish tends to limit the access of subordinate fishes to available life resources such as food. As commonly observed in brown bullhead, salmon, cichlids, and medaka, the dominant fish chases subordinate fishes away from food resources (Reebs, 2008).Thus, they are forced to occupy the barren part of the habitat. As a consequence, fishes in the lower ranks are prone to stress due to annoyance and bullies of dominant fishes. This stress induces them to release metabolic ho rmones, as revealed by blood analysis of subordinate fishes (Reebs, 2008), that may affect then their physiological processes including growth and reproduction. The stability of the dominant status depends on the type of fish species. For instance, rainbow trout can remember their hierarchical place. Even if there will be a reduction in the physical strength of the dominant fish, lower rank fished would not attempt to take advantage and stage a coup (Reebs, 2008).On the contrary, catfishes in lower rank often look for an opportunity to dethrone the dominant fish as it shows weakness (Reebs, 2008). In the same manner, as the dominant males of cichlid guard the breeding areas, subordinate males always look for an opportunity of entreating females. These experimental observations proved the social dynamics among fishes.Territorial Defense and Aggressive BehaviorsIt was observed among Cottus bairdii and Rhinichthysvcataractae that adults used to occupy the deeper part of their habitat wh ile the young forages on the shallow part (Reebs, 2008). This condition not only exposes the young to the threat of predation but also limits their food access.Meanwhile, in Betta splendens, the nest-holding males tend to display more aggressive behavior during the female laying of eggs and even more after the hatching of eggs (Jaroensutasinee and Jaroensutasinee, 2003). Also, black-belt cichlids, Cichlasoma maculicauda, assault egg predators more ferociously than non-egg predators (Reebs, 2008). They usually fry the enemy at a particular distance before launching an attack. This territoriality in terms of food resources defense is effectively done over fairly small habitat. If food resources are in a vast area, the dominant fish can hardly provide efficient protection, hence, leading to non-display of aggressive behaviour (Reebs, 2008).Trout and salmon have been observed to occupy and protect vast areas when food resources are limited. This means that territorial defense is absent i f the ecological needs are distributed in vast areas and if the number of intruders is great as compared with the inhabitant fishes (Reebs, 2008).Mating and Aggressive BehaviorsFish may acquire aggressive behavior by merely just observing aggression between conspecifics (Clotfelter and Paolino, 2003). The presence of audience during fish fight may reason out for the increased behavioral display between fighting fishes (Doutrelant and McGregor, 2000).In B. splendens, male-fight losers used gill cover to attract non-witness female while the winner displayed to both witness and non-witness females (Herb, Biron, and Kidd, 20030). After witnessing the two-male wrestle, the female fighting fish, B. splendens, spent time more often with the winner while failure to witness the event, the female visited more often the loser (Doutrelant and McGregor, 2000).Conversely, although size-advantage males of B. splendens species have more chance of winning male-fight but the winning does not affect f emale preferences of mate (Jaroensutasinee and Jaroensutasinee, 2001).Dominant males of swordtails and guppies delve on the larger part of their habitat including the dwelling place of the females (Reebs, 2008). Due to dominant exclusion, the sexual activities of subordinate fishes tend to be suppressed. This process of exclusion paves the ways for the subordinate male guppies to spontaneously develop a more robust body color that is more attractive for female guppies, thus, regaining the chance for mating (Reebs, 2008).Biological Bases of AggressionAggressive behaviors among animals are typically attributed to the biochemical function of the androgens. Researches revealed that by androgen decrease in a number of animal male species through castration lessened aggression while injection of hormones to castrated males caused regained aggressions (Desjardins, Hazelden, Van der Kraak, and Balshinea, 2005).Based on the findings of the group of John Wingfield, aggression can also be ascri bed to physiological causes. They postulated through Challenge Hypothesis that aggressive encounters among males of the same species lead to production of androgens (Desjardins, Hazelden, Van der Kraak, and Balshinea, 2005).Their notion resulted to the emersion of several studies relating aggressive behaviors with increase in androgen, urinary, plasma, and fecal level.

Essay on Same-Sex Parenting - 1442 Words

Same-Sex Parenting Since the early 1900s, homosexual people have become increasingly popular and greatly resisted. People that are homosexual face barriers placed upon them by the political system and society. Due to these challenges, homosexuals fought to have the same marital and parental rights as heterosexual people. Same-sex adoption is not prohibited in most states in the United States of America and many places worldwide. Family is not determined solely on blood relations and should be legalized in all parts of the world; because homosexual parents are just as good as heterosexual parents, if not better, and can provide an enriching second chance for many children waiting to be adopted. Homosexual parents exhibit parenting†¦show more content†¦These desires will translate into parenting by a homosexual person or couple because when their child is experiencing an internal conflict, whether it is about self-identity or sexual orientation; a homosexual parent will be able to sympathize and relate to the child more because they have experienced it as well, thus, making the child feel comfortable to talk to their parent and feel understood. Many heterosexual parents fail in this aspect and make their child feel disconnected from them because many heterosexual parents are usually not open to these types of issues. Children of homosexual parents feel less pressure placed on them from gender stereotypes. After all, homosexuals do not fall into traditional gender roles so they would have fewer expectations on the children to act like their biological gender role than a heterosexual parent would. For example, I was waiting in line at an event and there was a mother waiting with her children as well, a girl and a younger boy. The girl took a toy away from the boy and he began crying. The mother became annoyed by his crying and yelled at him â€Å"STOP CRYING LIKE A LITTLE GIRL!† The little boy became sadder but stopped crying shortly after. By the mother making that comment to her son she took away his opportunity to be himself and express his emotions as a human being. Marriage And Divorce A Study Of Human Development

Marriage and Divorce Anthropology can be defined as the study of human development over a period. God performed the first marriage in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve, both made in God’s image, were joined and commanded to â€Å"be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth† (Genesis 1). Marriage, as stated in the Bible, is a lifelong commitment between a man and women before God. Marriage was created in Genesis 2:23  24, â€Å"The man said, ‘this is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called â€Å"woman,† for she was taken out of a man.† A man will leave his father’s home, and seek a woman to become one with. God proposed marriage to be a profound functional unity, walking in integrity, serving God, and keeping his commandments†¦show more content†¦Biblical marriage is between a man and a woman who become one. Throughout this course we read many writings that can closely relate to this statement. For examp le, Thomas Aquinas, a theologian and philosopher from the 1250s, explained that by loving another individual, you must become one with them. He analyzed love as an appetite, or a transformation when two people love and marry one another, they take the form of one another. However, before you can consume the shape of your loved one, you must build a relationship with God. We are establishing a healthy relationship by figuring out how to love and cherish, as Christ does for the Church, and by choosing to remain physically immaculate until marriage (Gen 2:24, Matt. 19:5, Eph 5:31). During the Bible era, a couple was considered married once they were united, or engaged. For the couple to separate after the marriage, they would have to get a legal divorce. This Biblical perspective contrasts with the views of the Christians in today’s society. Our culture sees this relationship as an optional commitment. Marriages should be formed between one man and one woman who are willing to work together through their trials and tribulations. However, nowadays, marriages are falling apart because they are often called off at the first sight of contention. Attacks on the Biblical perspective of marriage are attacks on the relationship that Christ offered us to demonstrate his

Christmas Carol The Moral Message Essay Example For Students

Christmas Carol The Moral Message Essay In the preface to A Christmas Carol, Dickens states that he had endeavoured in this Ghostly little book, to raise the Ghost of an idea. To what extent do you think he is successful in creating an enjoyable Christmas story with a serious moral message about the treatment of others? A Christmas Carol is the story of a single mans spiritual journey in the festive season. Dickens tries to raise the Ghost of an idea by basing the novel on his own experiences as a working class individual in the Victorian era. Dickens raises moral issues still relevant today, such as the immense variation in quality of life between classes. The topics raised will linger in the readers minds, in order for them to understand the social and spiritual consequences of their actions. Dickens aim was to raise awareness of a social and economic plight. He chooses to convey this fundamental message through the simple story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner. This book uses Scrooge as a metaphor to show the wealthy Victorian public the plight of those living in extreme poverty, and that it is never too late to adjust your ways. This allegory, though basic, is effective, as the one dimensional characters are polarised, emphasising the moral reversal. This allows people to identify more with Scrooges spiritual journey. In the preface, Dickens also states that he does not want readers to feel out of humour after having read the novel. The purpose of the book is seemingly to entertain and enlighten, not to cast a burden onto anyones mind. The similarities between characters and the social classes in Victorian society must not be taken with offence. The book, although not religious, does have undertones of Christianity, clearly shown through the three spirits and the significance of life after death. Scrooge is instantly introduced as a cruel and immoral person, to ensure the audiences reaction to him is negative. The way Scrooge is described is also reflective on his treatment of the poor: he was a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone. This shows that he never gave away money to anyone, and was greedy with his wealth. Scrooge is also described as a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, clutching, covetous, old sinner. This suggests the list of negative characteristics could go on indefinitely. The use of pathetic fallacy strengthens Scrooges image as a bad character, although this comparison would have been much more significant in Victorian England, as winters were harsh and bleak, especially for the poor. No wind that blew was bitterer than he, no falling snow more intent upon its purpose. This description of Scrooge contrasts strongly with that of his nephew, Fred, who is all in a glow; his face was ruddy and handsome; his eyes sparkled, and his breath smoked again. These two descriptions, when juxtaposed, show the extreme linguistic and physical contrasts between the two characters, although they are related. The difference between these two characters simply helps to emphasise Scrooges malicious nature and help the readers warm to Fred. Scrooge is also described as solitary as an oyster, a manifestation of his reclusive nature and self. However, this leads to the question, is Scrooge like an oyster, holding a pearl inside, with the potential to love and give? The scene with the charity workers is used as a plea for the poor and destitute people of Victorian society. Many thousands are in want of common necessaries, hundred of thousands are in want of common comforts. This statement, issued from one charity worker only leads on, however, to a show to Scrooges selfishness and lack of empathy. I dont make myself merry at Christmas and I cant afford to make idle people merry. This should influence the audience to act in such a way as to distance themselves from Scrooges behaviour, and to give to the poor. The harsh response from Scrooge, coupled with his discourteous tone and rude language implies that he believes unemployed people are worthless and not deserving of his money or time. .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665 , .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665 .postImageUrl , .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665 , .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665:hover , .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665:visited , .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665:active { border:0!important; } .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665:active , .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665 .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uccee2e1b2cfd29f7925a608c14053665:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Modern Drama EssayDickens uses Scrooge, throughout this scene, as a mouthpiece for the prevailing attitudes of the particular time the poor were routinely criminalised. This scene leads to further alienation and hatred of Scrooge. Conversely, Scrooges reaction would not have differed greatly from that of people at the time, as support for the poor law and treadmill was common, and Victorian policies greatly endorsed. Through the governments ideas, people began to criminalise the poor, although this concept is far removed from the assistance they are given today. Scrooge shows throughout this discussion his support for the imprisonment of poor people, as he has even gone so far as to aid these organisations: I help to support the establishment I have mentioned: they cost enough.
